Founded in 1869 by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, the hospital has grown to become a major community and tertiary care hospital in Albany, New York. The Cardiac Surgery Program began in 1989 and since then has become the largest program in the Capital District. The hospital has been the recipient of numerous high-ranking accolades from health care organizations across the country. These include:
- The independent Solucient Institute named St. Peter’s a Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospital for six years in a row-making it the only hospital in New York state and one of seven nationally to earn that status.
- Rated as a Five-Star Cardiac Hospital by HealthGrades (http://www.healthgrades.com/) for coronary artery bypass and heart valve surgery placing St. Peters in the top 5 percent of cardiac facilities
- Named in a 2004 study by the New York State Department of Health for having the lowest mortality in the state for heart valve or valve and bypass surgery
- Top five in the Northeastern United States for heart valve surgery (Money Magazine 2004)
- Northeastern New York’s busiest Cardiac Center in 2002 and 2003 (The Business Review)
- Received Distinguished Hospital Awards of Patient Safety™ in 2004 and 2005 from HealthGrades. St. Peter’s Hospital is among the top three percent of hospitals nationally in patient safety. St. Peter’s is the only hospital in New York Sate and one of only 46 nationally to receive it two years in a row.
- Designated as national Magnet™ Hospital for excellence in nursing services.
The hospital’s Cardiac and Vascular Institute provides a full range of services. This includes non-invasive, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and peripheral vascular interventions. All types of cardiac surgical procedures exclusive of transplantation are performed at St. Peter’s Hospital with results surpassing both state and national benchmarks.
St. Peter’s Hospital also has the busiest General Thoracic Surgery Program in the Capital District. A large variety of lung, esophageal, and other non-cardiac thoracic (chest) surgical procedures, exclusive of transplantation are preformed.
